Muscle relaxing injections

Muscle relaxing injections are a popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure. The tiny injections are used to diminish facial lines by selectively limiting the movement of various facial muscles.

Lines and wrinkles can result in a prematurely aged appearance. Whether it’s frown lines, crows feet lines around the eyes, lines on the forehead, smokers lines around the mouth, nostrils (from flared nostrils) lines from dimples on the chin, along the jaw line or around the neck, muscle relaxing injections can help. Also it can be used to correct a ‘too square’ jaw line as it can help to lift the lower part of the face.

In 2007, 2.75 millions Americans had injections, and the procedure is becoming increasingly popular all over the world. It has actually been used since 1960 to treat a range of medical conditions including its use in much larger doses to treat children (over the age of two years old) who suffer from cerebral palsy to help them to walk.

This treatment can also be used to treat excessive localized sweating by injecting into the skin to block the action of the nerves that control sweat glands. It has also been used to treat patients suffering from migraines and severe tension headaches, as well as to relieve teeth clenching and grinding. There are also studies that show also an interesting action on acne. By stopping the sebaceous glands overproducing sebum, the skin dries and produces less spots.

In cosmetic procedures the injections work by relaxing wrinkle-causing muscles, which softens existing facial lines and can also prevent the formation of new ones. The needles are very fine and only a tiny volume is injected, making the procedure relatively painless.

A treatment should last for 3-4 months; re-visit when lines start to reappear. There’s no set age from which you should consider treatment, it really depends on when your lines start to appear on a permanent basis. Some people get lines earlier – for instance using a computer screen can cause a constant frown.

It’s always better to avoid having too much treatment. When administered correctly and with skill a very natural appearance can be maintained. Always go for less than you think you need, then re-assess a few weeks later, discuss with your doctor and top-up if necessary.

This treatment is  considered as safe in that there are no major or harmful side effects but it is important to only get treatment with a doctor. Anatomical knowledge is vital as well as knowledge of muscle physiology and the proper training.
